Hartlepool Borough Council announces plans to sell off land for housing

Council chiefs are set to sell off land for housing on the edge of a village on the outskirts of the town.

Hartlepool Borough Council is inviting tenders for land earmarked for housing on the edge of Hart Village.

The 7.8 acre site, with space for up to 30 houses, is owned by the Council.

The land is currently identified in the Draft Local Plan for housing development and was previously leased for farming.

The sale particulars for the site state that the new homes would be within 5.4 acres, with the rest of the site outlined for open space and hedgerow.

Hartlepool Council is also inviting proposals for a joint venture.

Councillor Christopher Akers-Belcher, Chair of Hartlepool Borough Council’s Finance and Policy Committee and leader of the council, said: “With the ongoing significant cuts in Government grant it is important that the Council maximises best value for its assets to help protect frontline services in the future.

“This is an excellent opportunity for developers to purchase sought-after land in a highly prestigious location and we anticipate that there will be a high level of interest.”

Over the next three years (2017/18 to 2019/20), Hartlepool Council will see its Government funding reduce by almost £10m.

This means that by 2019/20, the Council will have seen Government funding cut by over two-thirds (£45m) since 2010/11 – the year when the austerity cuts were first introduced.

The land is on the western edge of Hart Village and next to high quality housing and farm land.

Hartlepool Council also receives a bonus on all new homes built which provides vital revenue to the authority.
