Hartlepool boy knocked over by car remains in a critical condition

A Hartlepool youngster hit by a car remains in a critical condition in hospital.

Ethan Owens, nine, is in James Cook University Hospital fighting for his life after he was involved in a collision with a Range Rover in the Marina Way area at around 5.45pm on Monday.

Last night more than 1,200 candles were lit outside St Oswald's Church tonight as the Dyke House community showed its love for Ethan.

The event was organised within just a few hours by staff and volunteers at the Wharton Trust and its Annex community centre, who know Ethan and his family well.

Cleveland Police said today that Ethan remains on the critical list.

Father Graeme Buttery, the parish priest of St Oswald's began the ceremony by leading a speech before Ethan's loved ones released blue balloons.

Dozens of Mail readers have left heartfelt messages of support to Ethan.

On the Mail's Facebook page Gail Pearce wrote: "Get well soon little man."

Jenn Hewetson said: "Get well soon."

Angela Matthews added: "I can see this town is pulling together for Ethan and family prayers for you Ethan God is with you."

And Christine McGill Cooper wrote: "Keep fighting Ethan. We're all rooting for ya little man."
