A THIEF has been slapped with a court bill of over £200.
Dean Dennis Jenkins appeared at Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court charged with two counts of theft.
The 28-year-old stole cheese worth £110 from Sainsbury’s, in Hartlepool, on October 17.
The day before he swiped Bold washing detergent, worth £18.90 from Tesco.
Prosecuting, Guy Prest told justices that the theft of cheese was committed as part of a group of others.
Jenkins, of Church Street, Hartlepool, pleaded guilty to the crimes.
Mitigating, Stuart Haywood, said: “He was released from prison with no money and he has also been in dispute with the Department of Work and Pensions.
“He was stealing to survive because he couldn’t do anything else, he didn’t have anyone who he could call on to help him financially.”
Chairman of the bench Patricia Hutchison fined him £140, ordered him to pay £48.90 compensation and also to pay £40 towards the court costs.
