A DAD has set off on a hair-raising mission to grow a beard for charity for 365 days.

Hartlepool man Paul Gate decided he wanted to do his bit for Miles For Men, a men’s cancer charity which was founded by his pal Micky Day.

So 38-year-old Paul decided that he would grow a beard for a whole year and seek sponsorship money to boot.

The dad-of-four has already completed a month of the beard-a-thon, after starting the challenge in November, and his facial hair is already about an inch long.

Paul said: “Everyone is already taking the mick out of me.

“I’ve got more hair on my face than on my head!

“God knows what it’s going to be like in a year’s time.”

He added: “Basically I’ve lived out of town for 19 years and now I’ve moved back.

“I’m close friends with Micky and I just wanted to do my bit for the charity because it’s such a good cause.

“I just thought, why not grow a beard for a full year and do something for a charity in the town.”

Paul is going to put sponsor forms in local shops, and his partner Val Armstrong is going to organise a charity dance show to help boost the fund further.
