HARTLEPOOL residents can cut the cost of keeping warm this winter.
Around 15,000 people in the town are eligible for the Government’s Winter Fuel Payment, which ranges from £100 to £300 per person depending on their circumstances.
Anyone born before July 5, 1952, is entitled to tax-free help but how they actually get depends on their circumstances during the ‘qualifying week,’ September 15-21.
Most winter fuel payments are made automatically, so those who have received it before will not need to do anything, but council chiefs are urging anyone who has just reached state pension age to come forward to make sure they do not miss out.
Payments are expected to be made in November and December and those eligible should receive their money before Christmas.
Council customer and business team leader Kim Johnson said: “As residents have been coming in to the Civic Centre to claim their concessionary bus pass, we have been reminding them they are also entitled to claim the Winter Fuel Payment.
“It is really important residents claim their entitlement.”
