Hartlepool funeral director Gerald Martin appeared in court today after being charged with further historic sex offences.

Martin, 65, who is awaiting trial at the crown court over a string of similar allegations, attended a brief hearing at Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday morning.

He faces a further nine new allegations, all against boys, comprising five alleged indecent assaults on boys, two serious sexual offences against boys and two of an attempted serious sexual offence.

Magistrates transferred all the charges to Teesside Crown Court as some of the charges are too serious to be dealt with by the lower court.

Martin spoke only to confirm his age and address.

He did not formally enter any pleas to the charges, but his solicitor, John Relton, indicated not guilty pleas to the five indecent assault allegations.

Martin, of Valley Close, Hartlepool, is due to appear next at Teesside Crown Court on Wednesday, December 23.

He was granted unconditional bail in the meantime.
