The Hartlepool Labour Party is backing Jeremy Corbyn to be the next leader of the national party.
The local party announced its support for the veteran left wing backbencher on its website and Twitter account.
It followed a meeting of the Hartlepool general management committee which includes delegates from all wards in town.
Mr Corbyn, who entered the race at the eleventh hour, has become the surprise favourite for the leadership race with one poll putting him on 43 per cent.
The Hartlepool Constituency Labour Party said on its website: “Following a vote amongst delegates attending, Jeremy Corbyn MP was the clear favourite.
“After considering the strengths and weaknesses of all candidates Jeremy’s passion for change gave him the advantage and we would urge all party members and affiliated supporters to consider the below message when determining their choice and making their vote in the forthcoming elections.”

The article quoted Mr Corbyn when he spoke of the Labour Party’s “timeless task” of standing up against injustice.
The party is also supporting the nomination of Tom Watson for deputy leader.
Edwin Jeffries, President of Hartlepool Constituency Labour Party, said: “I would urge all members to take part in the leadership vote, which is one member one vote.”
