An optometrist is hoping to land a Best of Health title for the second time in three years.

Ross Hutcheson is once again in the running for the optometrist of the year title at the Hartlepool Mail-run awards and is hoping to emulate his success of 2013.

Just yesterday, I was talking to a man we had helped and he was grateful for the support he received. It is lovely to get that sort of recognition

This time, appreciative members of the public praised him for his “excellent service” and for being “very friendly and thorough.”

Ross said: “The recognition for something that you do day in and day out is always a surprise and a bit of a shock.

“But it is always nice to be recognised.”

Job satisfaction for Ross comes when he has helped a member of the public. He said: “Just yesterday, I was talking to a man we had helped and he was grateful for the support he received.

“It is lovely to get that sort of recognition.”

This year’s Best of Health competition is now closed to entries and the judging panel will meet later this week to handle the tough task of drawing up a shortlist.

Ross joins a strong list of nominated contenders for this year’s awards – backed by North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, the Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees Clinical Commissioning Group, the Cleveland Fire Support Network and Seneca Homes.

Once the judges have narrowed down the field, the winners will be announced at a grand finals night, to be held at the Hardwick Hall Hotel on Thursday, June 18.
