A shoplifter who stole a bottle of wine returned a day later to pay for it.

Scott McKinley took the £11.59 bottle from a McColl’s store, Hartlepool Magistrates’ Court heard.

“He concealed the bottle in his jacket before leaving,” said Sean Ell, prosecuting.

McKinley, 27, of Elderslie Walk, Hartlepool, admitted theft on October 3.

John Relton, defending, said in mitigation: “Mr McKinley returned to the shop the next day to offer to pay for the wine, which shows genuine remorse.”

The magistrates ordered McKinley to pay £251 in costs and compensation.
