VOTERS will go to the polls today and people are being urged to use their right to vote.
All kinds of locations are being used to make sure people can cast their vote. Scroll down to read a list.
They include The Mowbray, on the Fens, Inspirations garden centre within Stranton Cemetery and several churches and schools.
Eight people are vying to be Hartlepool’s MP including Labour’s Iain Wright who has held the position for the last 11 years.
And 55 hopefuls are standing for one of 11 seats available on Hartlepool Borough Council.
The polls remain open until 10pm tonight.
Peter Devlin, Hartlepool’s electoral registration officer, said: “As always, we would encourage people to exercise their right to vote in the parliamentary and local elections.”
The town’s next MP will be announced in the early hours of tomorrow morning following the official count at the Mill House Leisure Centre.
A host of national and international media are due to be at the count including a TV and radio station from Switzerland.
They are possibly hoping for a big upset by Phillip Broughton of Ukip which is targeting Hartlepool following recent visits by their leader Nigel Farage.
Also hoping to cause an upset and overturn Iain Wright’s 5,509 majority is first-time independent candidate, town taxi driver Stephen Picton.
Richard Royal is hoping to become the first Conservative Hartlepool MP for more than 50 years.
Hilary Allen is standing for the Liberal Democrats and Michael Holt for The Green Party.
Granddad John Hobbs, aged 80, is another independent candidate while Sandra Allison is standing on the fight for services to be reinstated at Hartlepool hospital.
Hartlepool’s turnout in the last General Election in 2010 was 55.5 per cent.
The successful council candidates will be announced later on Friday morning.
