A WOMAN is urging more people to help a hospice as she celebrates scooping more then £5,000 in its lottery.

Kim Sewell, from Hartlepool, pocketed £5,750 after winning Hartlepool & District Hospice’s last rollover first prize.

Kim has supported the lottery for almost 20 years after the hospice cared for her dad when he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

She said: “I felt sick with worry about Dad coming into the hospice, but as soon as we arrived the support that the multi-disciplinary team provided meant that I was freed up to simply be there for Dad, I couldn’t have done it without their support.”

Before he died, Kim’s Dad spent 21 and a half weeks in the Inpatient Unit, and Kim said: “I can’t sing the praises of the team enough. They take over the care of your loved one, giving you time to be there for them and are a huge support for everyone in the family as well.

“Everyone should be cared for at the end of their life like they are at the hospice. It is a truly amazing place with amazing people.”

Kim’s big win came in the weekly lottery draw on September 5.

She has supported the hospice lottery since it first started back in 1995. After initially paying the lottery collectors who visited each week she switched to Direct Debit.

Kim added: “This is a great way to support the hospice; I don’t even notice the money going out each month.

“I’ve won a couple of small prizes over the years but this was a huge surprise and goes to show that there is a chance of winning a lovely prize at the same time as supporting an amazing local charity.”
