A TOTAL of 250 people have signed up to the blood donor register in Hartlepool in less than six weeks.

It took five and half months for the same amount of people in the town to sign up to give blood last year.

The impressive figures come after the Mail launched the Mine’s A Pint campaign, aiming to halt a worrying decline of blood donors in Hartlepool.

And delighted donor bosses have hailed every person who signed up to save lives.

They revealed that 250 people have already signed up to join the blood donor register since the Mail started the campaign.

Holly Mason, lead donor relations manager at NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT), said: “We would like to thank everyone from Hartlepool who has supported the Mail’s Mine’s A Pint campaign to encourage people to become blood donors.

“We hope that new registrants who haven’t donated yet will book an appointment to do so soon.”

In 2011 it took until the middle of June for 250 new names to sign the blood donor register.

But the plea for new donors in Hartlepool doesn’t stop there. The Mail, in partnership with NHSBT, is still appealing for people to join up and save lives.

The campaign was launched after it was revealed the number of young donors aged 17-24 has fallen every year since 2008.

Just 172 people in the age group signed up last year and only 26 of them were aged 17 or 18.

Blood donor bosses are yet to reveal exactly how many of the new donors to join the register this year are in the 17-24 age category.

But everyone who has signed up will help NHSBT who need to recruit 225,000 new people every single year to replace existing donors who drop out of the system.

Residents will have the opportunity to give blood at upcoming sessions.

The first will be held at Billingham High Grange Community Centre, in Casson Way, this Friday from 2pm-3.45pm and from 4.30pm-7pm.

Another session will then be held at Hartlepool Town Hall, in Raby Road, next Tuesday, February 26, from 2pm-3.45pm and from 4.30pm-7.15pm.

Sessions will also be held at Owton Manor Community Centre and Seaton Carew Social Club next month.
