A HOSPITAL day unit specially for children has received the thumbs-up – and it is welcome news.

Staff in the children’s day unit at the University Hospital of Hartlepool have been celebrating after the unit was awarded the national You’re Welcome accreditation.

The award comes just months after the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust was honoured for the high standard of services for young people at the University Hospital of North Tees.

The day unit in Hartlepool was visited by a group of inspectors, who work as a part of a scheme run by Hartlepool Borough Council.

The Department of Health’s You’re Welcome quality standard assesses the services provided for young people against a number of quality criteria, from the general environment to how aware people are of the services.

The quality criteria makes sure that health services are getting it right for young people.

It sets the standards to ensure that the whole team looking after young people understands their needs and responds appropriately.

Ward manager Vicki Whitfield said: “The team has worked really hard to achieve this award. This is really good news for us to have achieved this standard right across the trust.

“I am really proud of everyone, who has helped us achieve this award. We want our services to be the best for our patients. This achievement demonstrates that we are providing a service to the very best standards.

“Young people and their families can be assured that a hospital visit is as comfortable as possible for young patients.”

Hospital play specialists Sandra Jackson and Clare Wise, who have been leading on the work to achieve the standards also commented.

Sandra said: “We’ve worked with the team to continually look at ways to improve our service for young people. We will never stop doing this.

“The success of our achievements is all down to the fantastic team work. We always look to our young patients to get feedback. They tell us what we can do to improve their hospital visit and they tell us what we’re doing well.

“We’re really lucky to have received so many charitable donations from grateful families to be able to make the service we provide more appealing to young people and we would like to thank everyone who has helped us do this.”
