A call has gone out to Tees Valley groups to help make a difference to mental health provision.

Officials at the NHS Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees Clinical Commissioning Group are planning an “engagement event” next month.

We always welcome new ideas, particularly from community organisations who might have a different perspective on how to help local people

Dr Boleslaw Posmyk, chair of the NHS Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees Clinical Commissioning Group

It’s open to groups which think they can make a real difference to the quality of life for people with mental ill-health or learning disabilities.

CCG chairman Dr Boleslaw Posmyk said: “Part of the job of the CCG is to help local people with mental health problems and with learning disabilities.

“Recently we have given extra support for pregnant women with mental health issues, invested in a good community support service for people with complex learning disabilities and improved the access to child mental health services.

“We always welcome new ideas, particularly from community organisations who might have a different perspective on how to help local people.”

Billingham Forum will host the engagement event on Friday, July 17 at 2pm.

Dr Posmyk said it was aimed at “those organisations who would like to put forward an initiative that they think could bring a real difference to the quality of life for people with mental ill-health or learning disabilities.

“Funds are available for these organisations to access for a 12-month period to test their ideas. They will need to show that they can reduce the number of people with serious mental illness dying at a young age (under 75), reduce the number of people being admitted to hospital with mental health disorders or support people/parents following a diagnosis of autism. There are some other objectives too.”

Activities during the event will include a talk about the requirements and details for getting funding.
