A display board for patients and visitors to read is one part of the new campaign from health promotion lead Lisa Tomlinson. Other aspects include information and samples of sun cream that people can take away.

Consultant dermatologist Robert Ellis said: “It is recommended that people of all skin tones use a factor 30 sunblock at least, with a 4 star UVA rating as a minimum and for best results apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapply every two hours during sun exposure.

“Apply all sunscreen generously to any exposed areas, including under the straps of swimwear which often moves through the day.

“Sunscreens come in various creams, sprays and lotions. Try to find one that you and your child are comfortable using – there is no right or wrong sunscreen as long as the SPF and star ratings are as above.

“A waterproof option is often useful, but should still be reapplied regularly after swimming, children should not only wear sun cream in the sun but should be protected by clothing, hats and UV blocking sunglasses. Babies under 6 months old should avoid direct sunlight as much as possible.”
