A TEAM of unsung heroes have deservedly got their moment in the spotlight after being nominated for an award.

The outpatients team at the University Hospital of Hartlepool has been described as “working tirelessly to provide a friendly, professional welcome to patients.”

We are always there to support people. Some are coming in for bad news and we often built up a relationship with them when they come back time and again.

The team is in the running for a Best of Hartlepool Hospital Team of the Year award.

Matron Maggie Harris said: “We are always there to support people.

“Some are coming in for bad news, and we often built up a relationship with them when they come back time and again.

“We see the different stages of what they are going through.”

The department handles cases of people who have been identified by GPs as someone who needs a specialist consultancy.

There are 20 staff at the Hartlepool site, running 90 clinics a week in ten specialist areas.

They include general surgery; medicine; dermatology; ear, nose and throat; opthalmology and vascular issues.

Maggie added: “We deal with around 900 patients a week, which is around 46,000 people a year. We have a great team and I am proud to be their manager.”

The nomination added: “I feel that the outpatient staff do not always get the recognition they deserve for their hard work, specialist nursing skills and dedication they give to the patients of Hartlepool and surrounding areas.”

This year, the awards are being backed by the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, the Hartlepool and Stockton-on-Tees Clinical Commissioning Group, and Seneca Homes.
