A TOWN hospice is branching out and opening a new store – but the charity also needs more volunteers.
Hartlepool & District Hospice is set to launch a £1 shop in York Road, opposite Subway, in a bid to sell off end-of-season items and boost its coffers at the same time.
The new store will open on Tuesday next week making it the ninth hospice shop in the town selling items like clothes, books, CDs, shoes and bric-a-brac.
But the organisation is also hoping to recruit volunteers to help out at the shops, which are vital to the financial upkeep of the hospice.
Karen Witherley, senior retail manager for the charity – which provides palliative care to people with terminal and life-limiting illnesses – said: “The new shop is opening on Tuesday, and basically we’re selling last lines and items which have previously been circulated around all of the hospice shops, for £1.
“We’re really excited about it, and we’re hoping it will be a success, and that people will come along and pick up a bargain while helping the hospice.
“We do need volunteers though, for all of our nine shops.”
She added: “We’d love to hear from anyone who would like to help out for a morning or an afternoon.
“They would be helping a local charity giving palliative care in their own town.
“The shops’ income is vital to the organisation.”
The shops are based in York Road, Raby Road, Middleton Grange Shopping Centre, Owton Maor Lane, Catcote Road, Wynyard Road, Northgate on the Headland, and also in Blackhall and Horden.
