A MOTORIST was airlifted to hospital with a broken leg after he was involved in a two-vehicle smash.
The driver of a Ford Focus was cut free from his car by firefighters following yesterday’s lunchtime crash.
The car was involved in a collision with a Mercedes Sprinter van on the A181, close to the B1283 turn-off at Wingate around 12.05pm.
Two crews from Peterlee Fire Station attended and removed the man, who is thought to be about 30, from his car before he was taken to the James Cook University Hospital, in Middlesbrough, by the Great North Air Ambulance.
The road was closed for 45 minutes while the emergency services attended the incident.
