AN inquest has opened into the death of Wynyard solicitor Peter Maine.

County Durham and Darlington coroner Andrew Tweddle opened the inquest on Thursday into the death of the 56-year-old dad-of-two, which has now been adjourned until Monday, November 18.

Police launched a murder-style investigation after Mr Maine was found with several stab wounds on a path near Maiden Castle Sports Centre, in Durham City, on Sunday, September 1.

Mr Maine, who had worked for Hall and Co LLP, in Easington Colliery, died from stab wounds to the chest.

Specialist officers have since then carried out searches around the area and interviewed more than 70 witnesses as they seek to find out more about the circumstances surrounding Mr Maine’s death. But police are still appealing for witnesses and released new CCTV footage earlier this week in a bid to trace new witnesses.

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
