Mail readers have added to calls for increased CCTV at a Hartlepool cemetery after items went missing from the grave of a tragic toddler.

Jacob Jenkins, 2, died last October after choking while eating a grape at Pizza Hut at Hartlepool Marina.

His dad, David Jenkins, says 13 items have been stolen since laying his son to rest in Stranton Cemetery six months ago.

They include a dozen small lights, and Jacob’s teddy.

David called on Hartlepool Borough Council to increase security at the cemetery in a bid to catch those responsible.

Readers agreed on the Mail’s Facebook page.

Leanne Lou Woodward posted: “Absolutely disgraceful...cctv is definitely needed up there.”

Sarah Sanderson added: “Absolutely disgusting whoever keeps pinching on the graves in that cemetery.

“My auntie’s, who died at 6 weeks old, grave has had things pinched off it which are literally irreplaceable; they were bought in Crete 13 yrs ago.

“Defo time for CCTV to stop these scumbags from doing this.”

Laura Thomas said: “People disgust me. Vile human beings or stupid senseless kids who have no respect for anything .”

Veronica King added: “Grave robbers lowest of the low.”

An online petition has been created to boost support and David has gone to the lengths of installing his own hidden camera to protect Jacob’s plot.

A spokesman for Hartlepool Borough Council said: “Theft from a grave is a despicable act and we can fully understand the family’s frustration.

“We do have CCTV within the cemetery but it is a very large site. Council staff working at the cemetery are asked to be vigilant at all times and we would also appeal to visitors to report any theft or suspicious behaviour to us.”
