Should Hartlepool Borough Council have introduced a 52p mileage rate allowance?
The council paid over £160,000 more in employee mileage expenses than recommended.
New figures released by the TaxPayers’ Alliance showed that for the year 2009 to 2010, the council paid £997,833 in mileage to staff at a rate of 47.7p per mile.
That was above the 40p a mile recommended by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs, and came to an additional £161,076.
And last year, the rate increased further to 52.2p a mile but the amount paid out is not available until the 2010-11 figures are audited.
