Should the cost of care for the elderly be capped?

An independent report on support for the elderly is today expected to recommend a cap on the total amount individuals and their families should pay for personal care in old age.

The cap - expected to be set at around £30,000 to £50,000, with the state picking up the bill for any spending beyond that level - is a key part of the Dilnot Commission’s strategy to encourage saving for the costs of care.
