Will a ban on advertising alcohol reduce the number of underage drinkers?

A Hartlepool health expert has backed a national bid to have alcohol banned from advertisements.

Richard Thomas, the consultant gastroenterologist at the North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, was one of five senior officials from across the region to issue a joint statement saying the plans were vital at a time when booze was having a devastating effect on children.

Their reaction came after Totnes MP Dr Sarah Wollaston’s put forward a Private Member’s Bill, calling for restrictions on alcohol advertising in cinemas, on television and online, as a means of reducing the number of children and young people harmed by alcohol.
