DESPAIR caused by the economic downturn has been linked to a 67 per cent rise in people being admitted to hospital for harming themselves.

Admissions to the University Hospital of Hartlepool where patients have harmed themselves has rocketed from 74 in the 12 months up to February last year up to 124 in the last 12 months.
