Going the extra mile for the customer is something that Kath and Tony are experts at.

Nothing is too much trouble for them, and the judges praised their selfless attitude.

Tony and Kath have been an integral part of tennis and badminton clubs in Hartlepool for many years.

They have overseen the huge transformation of Eldon Grove Tennis club from a two court facility to a seven court club.

Membership has soared and their success has now won them an honour in the inaugural Hartlepool Mail Sports Awards.

In true unsung hero style, Tony said: “We do it really because we love doing it. We get a lot of enjoyment from it. We would not do it otherwise.”

As well as tennis clubs, Tony plays a keen role in helping disabled people to get involved in sport.

He also runs a coaching committee and oversees the development of young players alongside the coach at Eldon Grove Tennis Club.

Perhaps the best testimony comes from the people who nominated this worthy couple.

In their words, “what Tony and Kath have done for sport in this town is truly outstanding.”

The couple have 80 years of experience between them in sport and Kath added: “We just want people to be the best they can be.”
