A TEENAGER has been arrested for allegedly putting the lives of a police helicopter crew in danger.
The Cleveland Police aircraft was targeted by a long-distance light as it flew over Hartlepool in the early hours of Wednesday.
A 17-year-old boy was arrested soon after the incident and has been bailed while police investigations continues.
Simon Wilkinson, air operations manager for the force, said: "We take incidents such as these extremely seriously and we will always deal with those responsible for such dangerous acts robustly.
"Shining lasers at pilots can dazzle them and endanger the lives of those in the aircraft."
The teenager was arrested for distracting the pilot of an aircraft after the incident at around 12.45am yesterday over Bishop Cuthbert.
He was taken to Avenue Road police station to be questioned before being bailed.
Officers on the ground had been immediately called in to search the area where the light seemed to have came from by the helicopter's crew.
Anyone who can help officers with their inquiries are asked to ring Hartlepool Police on (01642) 302178.
