LIBRARY chiefs have been given the go-ahead to serve alcohol and stay open until 11pm for specific events.

Hartlepool Borough Council’s planning committee has approved plans to alter the opening hours and the terms of use to stage ticketed literary events at the Central Library, in the town’s York Road.

The application, approved by the planning committee which is chaired by Labour councillor Rob Cook, also means the library can now stage small scale literary murder and mystery plays.

Council officers say the move should not have a major impact on the area around the library as most other businesses will be closed when events are expected to be held.

The application had been advertised by way of site notice, but no comments had been received.
