£2.5m fraud probe couple in court
A COUPLE at the centre of a £2.5m fraud probe have appeared in court.
Husband and wife Douglas and Joan Brown faced a judge at Teesside Crown Court after being arrested over the alleged deception.
Former company boss Douglas Brown, 60, faces 30 charges of obtaining property by deception and one charge of converting proceeds of crime spanning 12 years.
He is accused of siphoning money from Palmer UK, in Hartlepool, where he was managing director, into his personal bank account, and his wife's florist's shop.
The manufacturing site in Brenda Road, Hartlepool, is owned by American-based firm Palmer International, which makes products derived from cashew nut shell liquid.
Joan Brown, 58, faces six charges of concealing the proceeds of crime in connection with her business, Elvet Flowers, in Durham.
Neither entered a plea during the brief court appearance yesterday.
Judge Peter Fox granted the couple, who live in Houghton-le-Spring, bail until the next hearing on Friday, December 19.
