£3m injection for flats scheme

THE Government is spending almost £3million to help fund a housing development for older people.

Housing Hartlepool said the town has been awarded the money from the Department of Health to build the 60 two-bedroomed facility in the Rift House area.

The scheme will include flats for rent, shared ownership and outright purchase and provide high quality accommodation and extra care support services on the site of a former sheltered housing and residential care home.

The services will be flexible and be tailored to the needs and wishes of residents but will include care and support provisions.

The Orwell Walk development will include healthcare facilities and health promotion advice and community services such as a bistro, hairdressing, chiropody, library facilities, laundry, computer suite and the opportunity for people to take part in social activities.

A joint submission led by Hartlepool Borough Council, involving Housing Hartlepool, Hartlepool Primary Care Trust and developer Frank Haslam Milan will receive the Government funding towards the cost of building the flats.

Housing Hartlepool will own and manage the building, while the council and primary care trust will provide support and care services. Housing Hartlepool chief executive Catherine Purdy said: "The new development will be a real boon to older residents as they can retain their independence but still receive support and care if they need it.

"This tremendous facility will be Housing Hartlepool's first extra care facility."

Hartlepool MP Iain Wright said: "I am pleased that the Department of Health has listened and has provided an additional 2.9 million. The town really needs more affordable housing for people requiring additional care.

"This additional investment will provide much needed housing, will provide more community facilities and secure greater care in people's homes."

David Mellor, managing director of Frank Haslam Milan North East, added: "The development will provide an innovative solution to older people's housing in Hartlepool, allowing residents to live as independently as possible."

Nicola Bailey, Hartlepool Council's director of adult and community services, said: "It's an exciting project and one with which we are delighted to be involved. We are very grateful to the Department of Health for the funding which is making it possible."

Housing Hartlepool was set up in March 2004 to take over the ownership and management of the council's rented housing stock following a ballot by tenants.

It is a "not for profit" charitable organisation run by a voluntary board of four tenant members, four council nominees and four independent people.

The company manages 7,000 properties throughout the Hartlepool area and surrounding villages.

YOUNG rockers are being invited to put down their guitars and enjoy a night of local talent at a charity gig in memory of a popular teenager.

Cafe 177 is hosting a band night in aid of Red Dreams, the fund set-up by Dawn and Ian McManus following the tragic death of their son Kyle.

Kyle was 16 when he died suddenly from a brain haemorrhage last year after taking ill while playing with friends.

Local bands will be performing at the event on Friday as will bands (left) from Cafe 177’s own rock school who meet every Wednesday.

Youth Cafe staff hope that the night will raise a lot of money while helping to promote local talent from the area.

Lisa Powton, from Cafe 177, said: “This is a great opportunity for local bands to showcase their music, but also for rock fans to have an enjoyable time while raising money for a good cause.

“Our rock school has been really popular and we hope that people enjoy the work that they have done so far.”

Kyle’s mum, Dawn, said: “Young bands are always in need of somewhere to play, and with so many places closing that had music, Cafe 177 is providing a much needed venue for the up and coming music scene in Hartlepool.”

Doors open at 6.45pm and tickets are 2 each.

The night is aimed at young people aged between 13 and 19, and tickets can be collected from Cafe 177, at 177 York Road.

AN operation to clamp down on thieves cashing in on stealing metal and selling it at scrapyards will be extended.

There has been a steady increase in the number of thefts from houses, churches and other buildings across the Tees Valley in the past year and police are cracking down on the problem.

Operation Graphite has been such a success since it was launched in Stockton in April that scrapyards in Hartlepool are now coming on board.

Stockton scrapyards have been working closely with Cleveland Police to stop the thieves trading in the metal for cash.

Plain-clothed police officers have been working inside the yards with officers outside carrying out checks. Inspector Steve Young, of Stockton’s neighbourhood policing team, said: “The demand for metals such as copper and lead in countries like China has led to a rise in their scrap value, and thieves have been cashing in.

“In the past few months we have worked closely with local scrap merchants to stop thieves trading stolen metals for cash. Workers at the scrapyards also ask the customers for photographic identification when buying metal.”

The operation was such a success in Stockton that it will be rolled out across the force. Scrapyards in Middlesbrough and Redcar are alreadyincluded.

Staff at the scrapyards will refuse to accept anything they suspect to have been stolen and any details will be passed on to the police. Police will then follow up inquiries with vehicles used to transport any stolen goods to the yards. Insp Young added: “This is a warning to thieves not to bother stealing lead flashings or other metals as there are no scrapyards in the area that will accept it.

“If you do attempt to take stolen goods to scrap metal merchants we have officers there to arrest you.”

Superintendent Martin Campbell, who leads a force wide team focusing on the crime, said: “Cleveland Police have been extremely successful in driving this type of crime down in the force area.

“Theft of metals is one area where global economics are having a disproportionate influence on our fight against crime.”

Shaw, who spoke only to confirm her name and address, was granted conditional bail until that hearing.
