£3,000 raised in player's memory
MORE than £3,000 was raised at a charity football match held in memory of a soccer-mad dad who died aged just 40.
Dad-of-two John Hogg died last December after a year-long battle with cancer.
The carpet fitter's family and friends held a charity football match at Trimdon Grange Recreation Ground and followed it up with a night in the Trimdon Colliery Club in his memory.
John's widow Lynn, 40, said: "He was a real family man who was very well-liked. He would do anything for anyone.
"Since he died we have been inundated with kind messages from people who he has worked with and met over the years.
"He always played in the local leagues and was well known as a good footballer. He always went up to see Sunderland play."
John lived in Blackhall for the last two years of his life but was originally from Trimdon Colliery and was dad to Robyn, 11, and Alex, six.
Two teams, made up of family and friends, took part in the friendly football match and then went on to the club to remember John.
The day raised 3,300, which will be split between Hartlepool and District Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support, who both helped care for John.
Lynn added: "John was told almost straight away that the cancer was incurable but went through chemotherapy to try to give himself as long as possible.
"The Macmillan nurses and the hospice were both fantastic. They both made a big difference and we are very grateful for what they do.
"I'm just really pleased we could raise so much money for them in John's memory."
