TWO choirs have joined forces to raise cash for seven Hartlepool charities.
The Hartlepool Male Voice Choir and Hartlepool Ladies’ Choir will perform together at a concert in the town’s Borough Hall in April.
The money raised will go to seven charities which the Hartlepool Borough Council Chairman, Councillor Stephen Akers-Belcher, is supporting in his year in office.
It will be the first time the two choirs have performed together in an event of this kind and the performance will includes a wide range of popular songs from shows and gospel choirs.
The Hartlepool Male Voice Choir has more than 80 members and is in its 54th year. It has performed around the country, including at London’s Royal Albert Hall, and as far away as Germany.
The ladies’ choir was founded 10 years ago by the wives of the Male Voice Choir members and has around 60 members.
The male voice choir chairman, Duncan Graham, said: “We have put together a very exciting, light hearted, fun programme, so there’s a night of sheer enjoyment in store for music lovers of all ages.
“Both the choirs are really looking forward to performing together and are delighted to be able to raise funds for Councillor Akers-Belcher’s good causes.”
The news comes at a time when there has been a major resurgence in choral singing in part down to the success of Military Wives Choir.
Eileen McConnell, publicity officer for Hartlepool Ladies’ Choir, said: “We’re a very lively crowd so the audience is in for a real treat.
“There is a huge amount of singing talent in Hartlepool and our joint performance comes against the backdrop of a major resurgence of interest in choral singing across the country, thanks in part to the success of groups including the Military Wives Choir.”
Coun Akers-Belcher said: “Both the choirs have a very well-deserved reputation for excellence and entertaining their audience, so this sure to be a wonderful evening.
“My sincere thanks go to them for organising this special event to boost my chosen charities.”
Coun Akers-Belcher’s chosen charities are: The Belle Vue Youth Project; Central Correctors; Hartlepool Young Carers; NYPD (Nurturing Young People’s Development); The Phoenix Funsters; The Rifty Youth Project and the Wharton Annexe.
Tickets for the show on Saturday, April 20, at 7.30pm, cost £10 (£8 for concessions) and are available from Hartlepool Art Gallery and Tourist Information Centre, Church Square, Hartlepool, or on (01429) 890000.
