GENEROUS residents raised almost £1m for a vital town charity last year in a staggering show of support.
And Hartlepool & District Hospice bosses admit it is only because of the incredible backing of the local community that the facility continues to provide the specialist care to its patients.
The hospice’s many supporters in Hartlepool and East Durham raised a total of £959,029 for the charity last year.
And the final 2013 total will be even higher as that figure incorporates events, corporate support, money raised through the hospice’s shops and lottery and gift aid from January 1 last year until November 30.
Today, hospice staff have expressed their huge thanks to the thousands of the charity’s supporters who continue to show their support each year and ensure the hospice is able to continue providing top-class care to those suffering with life-limiting illnesses.
Francis McAllister, director of fundraising at the Wells Avenue-based hospice, said: “Everyone at the hospice, patients, staff and families, would like to thank the local communities of Hartlepool and East Durham for their ongoing and constant support of their local hospice.
“It is this level of support from community groups, clubs and associations, individuals and local businesses which ensures we are able to continue to provide the specialist care and vital range of services to patients and families who are living with life-limiting illnesses.”
After analysing the breakdown of this year’s financial support, the charity’s bosses revealed that the largest income came through the hospice’s shops.
The charity shops in Hartlepool and East Durham raked in a massive £452,656.
Donated events, many of which were organised by kind Hartlepool residents, raised £102,569 while corporate support including the guild of patrons and corporate partnerships contributed to another £86,332.
The new-look hospice lottery, re-launched early last year, which saw the number of prizes increase from six to 26 each week, raised £296,818 while a further £20,654 was also raised for the charity through Gift Aid.
The charity’s bosses were keen to thank Karen Witherley and Julie Hildreth, who manage the hospice shops, and have done such a fantastic job.
And they revealed that they’re hopeful the complete 2013 income through the shops will surpass the half a million pound mark.
Residents are also reminded of how much of a difference Gift Aid can make, simply by ticking the Gift Aid box on donations if you are a taxpayer.
The hospice’s staff are now focussing on continuing the good work into this year and will soon be able to offer even more state-of-the-art services when the new £550,000 Health and Wellbeing Centre opens on site.
And the charity’s fantastic supporters are being urged to carry on fundraising and backing the hospice.
Francis added: “Everyone at the hospice is looking forward to the challenges of 2014 and to the improved range of services which our new Health and Wellbeing Centre will help us deliver.”
