A search for beauty and brains

BEAUTIFUL, talented and educated women from the Hartlepool and County Durham areas are being urged to enter a competition which could lead to the world stage.

Auditions for the Miss Durham contest start on Monday, January 28, and organisers have outlined the type of women they want to represent their area.

“We want someone who is very charismatic,” said Emma Gillies, the events executive at Sedgefield racecourse where the Miss Durham finals will be held in May.

“They must have good attitude and pride in their appearance. They must have a positive outlook and some good life experience to talk about.”

Entrants must be aged between 17 and 24 and Emma added: “They should be quite educated. They have got to step up to the mark and represent the region.”

The eventual winner of Miss Durham will go on to compete in the Miss England contest. The winner of that competition will represent England in the Miss World beauty pageant, founded by the late Eric Morley.

The event hosts a top prize of $100,000 and every year attracts thousands of entrants in over 120 countries.

For now, though, the search is on for entrants in the Miss Durham heat of Miss England.

Entrants can apply for Miss Durham by emailing egillies@sedgefield-racecourse.co.uk or calling Emma on (01740) 621925 for more information.

They can also apply via the Miss England website at http://www.missengland.info.

The Miss Durham final will take place at the racecourse on Saturday, May 25.
