A19 reopens after lorry smashes through central reservation

ROAD REPAIRS: The southbound A19

ROAD REPAIRS: The southbound A19

A DUAL carriageway has reopened after it was shut for more than fours when a lorry careered through the central reservation.

A Scania lorry smashed through a barrier on to the southbound carriageway near Wolviston while heading north.

Around 100 metres of fencing was wiped out in the accident.

Both lanes were closed following the incident at around 5.13am on Tuesday morning with motorists using the A178 and A689 in Hartlepool facing long tailbacks during rush hour as a result.

The town centre and Seaton Lane were among the busiest areas as drivers either searched for a different route to head southbound or turned back at the Wolviston roundabout on realising that they could not join the A19.

Tailbacks on the A19 stretched as back as far as the A181 Hutton Henry turn-off while the Highways Agency cleared the carriageway.

The lorry driver is not believed to be injured and the southbound road opened just after 9.30am.

Keep logging on for more details.
