A19 traffic hit by chemical spillage
RUSH-hour traffic came to a standstill as firefighters cleared a chemical spillage from a busy roundabout.
The Seal Sands roundabout, where the A19 meets the A689 and the A1185 near Wolviston, was blocked off to people coming from Hartlepool.
A liquid had been discovered on the road and tests showed it was ethylhexanol, an industrial chemical that can cause headaches and nausea if it is breathed in.
Police told motorists to keep their windows closed and diverted drivers through Billingham.
It took two hours for firefighters to clean-up the clear liquid following the alert at 4.40pm on Wednesday.
The roundabout was reopened at 6.40pm.
A Cleveland Police spokeswoman said: "It seems the liquid has leaked from a vehicle.
"The fire service attended and the road needed to be closed while it was cleaned away."
