A HOST of activities were laid on as part of an event to celebrate mining heritage.

Easington Social Welfare Centre, in Seaside Lane, Easington Colliery, was a hive of activity on Saturday as part of an event held in association with Beamish.

There were around 20 colliery banners on display, music from Murton Colliery Band and local primary school choirs as well as displays from local organisation and mining memorabilia on show.

It followed a rousing showing of the Miners’ Hymns, a homage to the coalfield set to live music, which was held at the centre on Friday night.

The event was held in the week that commemorates the start of the 1984-85 Miners’ Strike.

See the Hartlepool Mail and Peterlee Star next week for more coverage from the event.
