Antiques dealer faces trial over Shakespeare book
AN antiques dealer accused of stealing a valuable first edition of Shakespeare's works was due to face trial today.
Raymond Scott, 53, was originally arrested in June 2008 on suspicion of taking a 1623 folio from Durham University in 1998.
The investigation began after a man walked into the world-renowned Folger Shakespeare Library, in Washington DC, with the 400-year-old book, claiming to have discovered it in Cuba, and asked for it to be verified as genuine.
Experts suspected the book was stolen and called in the British Embassy as well as Durham Police and the FBI.
It led to the arrest of Scott, who lived with his then 80-year-old mother in a two up, two down council house in a quiet cul-de-sac in Washington, Tyne and Wear.
Scott, of Manor Grange, Wingate, denied theft, handling stolen goods and removing criminal property.
The trial, before Judge Richard Lowden at Newcastle Crown Court, is expected to last for six to eight weeks.
The First Folio is regarded as one of the most important printed works in English and is valued at between 3m and 15m.
