POLICE this evening charged John Darwin with two offences.

The 57-year-old Hartlepool man has been charged with obtaining a money transfer by deception in relation to a life insurance policy.

A second charge alleges that the 57-year-old made an untrue statement to procure a passport.

The confirmation that both charges had been brought against Darwin, whose Hartlepool address was The Cliff at Seaton Carew, were given in a statement read to the Press outside Kirkleatham Police Station in Redcar.

They were given this afternoon by Cleveland Police officer, Detective Sergeant Iain Henderson.

Darwin will remain in custody and will appear on Monday before Hartlepool Magistrates' Court where a remand application will be made.

Meanwhile, police have urged Darwin's wife Anne to contact them.

They urged her to make contact with them at the earliest opportunity but said that at this stage they don't know when she intends to return to the UK.
