STUDENTS hoping to embark on a summertime African adventure will be packing bags this weekend to help raise funds for their trip of a lifetime.
In July, 21 youngsters from Hartlepool Sixth Form College and two members of staff will be jetting out to Ghana to take part in charitable work and help neglected and disadvantaged children and help with community building projects.
The group will also be helping understaffed primary schools by teaching maths and English lessons and taking part in sporting activities.
But all those taking part need to raise £1,400 each in order to support their African trip.
To help boost the coffers, staff and students will be packing bags at Morrisons supermarket, off Clarence Road, tomorrow between 10am and 4pm.
On the same day, the students will be hosting a race night at the Grand Hotel, in Swainson Street.
Mo Bunter, Hartlepool Sixth Form College’s director of faculty, said: “We have 21 students and two members of staff going to Ghana on July 3 as volunteers.
“Part of the process is that they have to raise money through organising charitable activities leading up to it.
“Thirteen students and myself will be bag packing from 10am to 4pm in Morrisons on Saturday and we are hosting a race night at the Grand Hotel on the evening.”
College bosses have also appealed for any businesses interested in sponsoring the students to get in touch. The trip was being organised by popular geography and travel and tourism teacher James Gibson before his death six days before Christmas.
The 28-year-old died after being hit by a blue Jaguar in Grange Road, Hartlepool.
Staff are honouring his memory by working together to raise funds for the students to go to Ghana.
