Bible stories knit together

CHURCHGOERS have come up with a purl of an idea to tell the story of the Bible in an unusual way.

Members and friends of St George's Church, in Park Road, Hartlepool, have been knitting biblical scenes which will be on show at the church over Easter.

More than 30 members have been involved in the project which started when they decided to knit the scenes of the Last Supper.

Now the collection has scenes from Palm Sunday, the Crucifixion and the Resurrection.

They contain knitted figures and the Last Supper has knitted loaves of bread.

A different set will be on show to mark the major events of Easter.

The Rev Val Towler, a minister at the church, said the team has been working on the project for two months.

She added: "We have around 29 people knitting, five people doing French knitting and some sewing.

"We have also got some of the men involved in the woodwork.

"It has been a novelty but it has brought everyone in the congregation together and it has been great fun. Everyone has enjoyed it."
