Big crowds expected at carnival

THOUSANDS of people are expected to flock to a major summer carnival this weekend to celebrate community work.

Organisers are putting the final touches to the Owton Carnival, which will be held in Hartlepool this Saturday.

Manor Residents' Association and the Owton Fens Community Association (OFCA) joined forces to organise the free carnival to celebrate landmark anniversaries.

Manor Residents' Association, which is based in Kilmarnock Road, celebrates its 21st anniversary this year while OFCA has reached the 25 year milestone.

The carnival will be held in the field between Midlothian Road and Lennox Walk, between 10am and 6pm.

There is plenty going on to keep people entertained including fairground rides, a bonny baby competition, bingo, donkey rides, a car boot sale, market stalls, a vegetable competition, go-karts, bungee jumps, live music and a range of vintage cars on display.

Susan Harriman, administrator at Manor Residents' Association, said: "I am really pleased with the response we've had."

The Carnival Queen presentation will take place at 11am, pet judging at 12.30pm, bonny babies at 1pm and Glamorous Granny will be presented at 3pm.

Cleveland Police, Cleveland Fire Brigade and the Army will also be there in the information centre at the carnival.
