ULTRA-CARING youngster Lauren Emmerson only wanted one present on her 11th birthday – and that was the gift she could give to children with cancer.

The Hartlepool youngster celebrated her big day on Saturday by having 11 inches cut off her hair at Poppys hairdressers, in Victoria Road, Hartlepool.

And the locks she had removed will now go towards wigs for North-East children suffering from leukaemia.

She is also raising money for the Help A Capital Child appeal, which supports sick children.

Mum Donna, from the Bishop Cuthbert area of Hartlepool, said: “I am so proud of her. All she wanted to do was put a smile on the faces of poorly children.

“It is amazing, especially from someone of her age. I think what she is doing is fantastic.”

Lauren’s big-hearted donation saw 11 inches taken off her 16-inch long hair.

After her amazing donation, she nows sports a fashionable ‘bob’ style courtesy of the girls at Poppys.

Lauren said: “I’m pleased I did it. All I wanted to do was help others who are not as lucky as me to be well.”

Donna, 31, who works from home as a marker of distant learning papers, said: “It is so nice that she has thought to help others by giving them her hair.

“She understands that she is doing something for other people and that her own hair will grow back.”

Lauren chose the cause because she has a relative with leukaemia in the Sunderland area and Donna, who is married to Andy, 33, an electrician, added: “It all started when we were on the internet and someone had posted about something similar.

“Lauren said ‘I will do that’.”

Lauren, who has a younger brother Kristian, aged 11, and sister Savannah, aged two, had originally posted on the internet that she hoped to raise £100. But her big-hearted venture has already pulled in £300 in donations.
