Blind sweethearts tie the knot
BLIND sweethearts Mel Henderson and Trevor Scott have told how they "could see their wedding in their heads" as they tied the knot at an emotional ceremony that had guests in tears.
Mel and Trevor got married after both overcoming personal difficulties in their life.
The Mail reported in April that Mel was just 21 when she became completely blind in both eyes after being diagnosed with chronic glaucoma aged nine.
Just months after the health bombshell, Mel and her husband split up leaving her to bring up her two young sons alone, one of whom was just seven months old.
Mel, who has had both of her eyes removed to alleviate pain, was left with epilepsy following surgery and has also endured a bowel operation and further health problems following a hysterectomy last year.
But Mel, who was helped by a carer for the first six months of going blind and learned to look after her children, was given a ray of hope when she met Trevor, her "Mr Right", on a dating site for blind people.
Two years on, their love was sealed when they tied the knot in front of 145 guests.
Mel, who turned 40 two weeks ago, said: "I felt sad that I wouldn't be able to see the ceremony but in the last fortnight I've felt I could see it in my head.
"I felt like I could see Trevor in his charcoal-grey suit, white shirt and pink tie.
"I looked like a princess, I was told, and everybody in the ceremony was crying. Our fairytale dream has actually came true."
But the special occasion almost didn't go ahead, as just seven weeks before the wedding, she spent seven days in the University Hospital of Hartlepool and was treated for stress and damaged nerves caused by having her eyes taken out.
But she recovered in time and determined Mel said: "I would have crawled down the aisle to marry Trevor." He said: "I'm on cloud nine."
Trevor, 52, a talented musician, lost his sight aged just five following a childhood accident in which he was hit in the eye by stones thrown by youngsters.
Mel travelled to the venue in a silver Chrysler 3000 and looked stunning in a Duchess silk and taffeta gown with a 7ft train.
The ceremony, at Peterlee Register Office on Saturday, was followed by a reception at Trimdon Station Community Centre.
The couple were treated to a night of luxury on Sunday in Sedgefield's Hardwick Hall Hotel before returning to start their married life at their home in Trimdon Station.
Beaming Mel, who is originally from Hull and mum to David, 21, and Robert, 19, said: "We are loving every minute. We are soaking it up and are really happy,"
She spent 12 weeks recording 140 personal thankyou CDs for her guests.
