Boost for diabetes sufferers

HEALTH bosses have launched a comprehensive resource pack to improve the independence of people with Type 2 diabetes.

The initiative follows research which suggests more people will develop diabetes due to increased obesity levels, which in Hartlepool are among some of the highest in the country.

The Supporting Self-Care in Diabetes pack includes personalised guides so that sufferers can find reliable sources of information and feel more in control of their condition.

Julie King, service reform manager for NHS Hartlepool and NHS Stockton-on-Tees, said it was important to allow patients to self-manage.

Patients are encouraged to use the packs to record all of their diabetes information, test results and personal goals.

The packs also contain information about diabetes, advice on managing diabetes through diet, exercise, medication and other lifestyle changes, tips on living with diabetes, including information about driving, travelling and socialising and contacts for diabetes service providers.

Julie added: "The resource pack is a great new benefit to patients with diabetes as it will assist them to take more control over their illness, and enable them to quickly find the relevant information they need."

Signs of diabetes include frequent urinating, excessive hunger and thirst, weight loss, slow-healing wounds and drowsiness, fatigue or weakness.
