Booze-free for charity

A GENEROUS labourer has quit the booze for a year as he aims to stay dry for the hospice.

Lliam Broom, 24, enjoyed his last tipple of alcohol with his mates on New Year’s Day, but the day later started his 12-month challenge.

Lliam, who lives in the Throston area of Hartlepool, insists he won’t touch a drop for a full year as he aims to raise cash for Hartlepool and District Hospice.

He initially planned to give up booze for his own sake, but after his pals scoffed at the idea and said he would not be able to hack it, he invited them to put their money where their mouths are and donate to the Wells Avenue-based town facility.

“I chose to raise funds for the hospice because they are such a great help to the people of Hartlepool in a variety of ways,” said Lliam.

“My commitment to supporting them will also help motivate me to achieve my own goal to stop drinking. It will be hard, but I am determined to do it.”

Lliam, who enjoys going out most weekends, said his effort is not going to stop him enjoying his social life, but vows that he will just stick to the soft drinks when he is out with his dad and his mates.

The fundraiser is hoping to hit the £750 mark in donations to hand over to the hospice.

And he is not the only man in town who is giving up booze for the cause.

Last month the Mail reported how Joe Casey, 35, also set himself the target of a year without a drop of alcohol.

Greg Hildreth, hospice fundraiser, said: “I would like to say a big thanks to Lliam for choosing to support the hospice and wish him all the best for this long challenge.

“I hope he reaps the benefits of being sober while raising lots of cash for our charity.

“Every penny raised will go towards funding patient care at the hospice.”
