Brigade reaches landmark year

A BOYS' Brigade company is celebrating its 80th anniversary and organisers are urging more youngsters to get involved.

The 4th Hartlepool Boys' Brigade Company meets twice a week at St Matthew's Community Centre, off Elwick Road.

Every week dozens of youngsters between the ages of six and 18 head to the centre to take part in a range of activities, learn new skills and make friends.

They take part in marching sessions, team games, football, hockey and indoor cricket. The 4th Hartlepool Boys' Brigade Company is one of five across town.

Leader in charge George Bainbridge, 54, said: "It is a great achievement to reach 80 years and that is as a result of a lot of hard work by a lot of people over the years.

"Youngsters can gain lifelong friendship, learn new skills and be involved in a series of activities.

"We also go on regular camping trips and in August next year we will be going to Hutton Rudby on a five day camp.

"We have approximately 40 youngsters that regularly come down to the centre and take part in the fun sessions but there is always room for more," added the retired steelworker.

The aim of the Boys' Brigade is to advance Christianity, learn obedience, discipline and self respect.

Youngsters at the 4th Hartlepool Boys' Brigade Company meet on Mondays, between 6.30pm and 8pm and on Fridays, between 6pm and 9.30pm.

There are three sections – anchor boys, who wear red jumpers, for youngsters aged between six and eight; juniors, who wear blue jumpers, is for those aged between eight and 11; and Company, who wear blue shirts, is for those aged between 11 and 18.

The Company has always met at St Matthew's Community Centre and has camped in various areas of North Yorkshire, Northumberland and Scotland over the years.

It was started in 1930 by Hartlepool man Jim Thompson who served in the Company for more than 50 years until 1981.

There is still room for new starters and further details can be found by visiting www.4thhartlepoolbb.com
