Brother of speeding driver held
THE innocent brother of a speeding driver was arrested and kept in custody after false details were given to police.
Yunus Sabanci lied to officers when they pulled him over in a VW Polo, Durham Crown Court heard.
Stephanie Donington, prosecuting, said: "He was stopped in Grants Houses, near Peterlee, on suspicion of speeding.
"It seems Mr Sabanci gave police the name and address of his brother.
"This eventually resulted in his brother being arrested on a warrant, and kept in custody for 43 minutes until the matter was sorted out."
Sabanci, 36, of Seaside Lane, Easington, admitted perverting the course of justice on July 19, 2008.
Judge Michael Taylor declined to hear mitigation before sentencing Sabanci to six months in prison, suspended for 12 months, including a 12-month supervision order.
The judge told him: "Hopefully your brother has already extended some form of justice to you.
"If you don't comply with any of the conditions of the sentence I have passed, you will be locked up.
"Now go away and don't do anything like this again."
