Burglars are spared prison
TWO burglars who travelled to Hartlepool to raid an industrial business have narrowly avoided going straight to jail.
Ian Caygill and Lee Harris targeted the firm at Graythorp Industrial Estate, on the outskirts of Hartlepool, over the May Bank Holiday weekend last year.
But they were disturbed by security staff and Caygill, 29, and Harris, 39, were stopped in a car nearby after a short police chase.
They had been found guilty of burglary at the Strakers compound after a trial at Hartlepool Magistrates' Court in January.
They both received suspended sentences and unpaid work after appearing at Teesside Crown Court.
Caygill of Firsby Court, Hemlington, received a 12-month prison sentence suspended for two years, plus 150 hours community service, while Harris was given a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and 220 hours unpaid work.
Andrew Turton, mitigating for both men, said they had changed their attitude and wanted to lead law-abiding lives.
He said of Harris, of Dalmuir Close, Eaglescliffe: "This man is able to remain out of trouble for substantial periods of time, as his record indicates."
