A TAXI driver was freed after becoming trapped in his cab after colliding with another vehicle at a busy roundabout.

The collision happened on the roundabout on Marina Way, Hartlepool at its junction with Middleton Road at around 7.30pm on Friday.

It involved a taxi and a 4x4 jeep-style vehicle,

The cabbie was taken to the University Hospital of North Tees in Stockton complaining of pain to his shoulder.

Firefighters carefully removed him on a spinal board after taking the back seats from the bashed up cab. The crash caused disruption to other motorists as the roundabout was closed for over an hour while the emergency services were on the scene.

The driver of the 4x4 was unhurt and the vehicle suffered less damage than the taxi.

Two fire engines from Hartlepool were called to the scene along with one from Stockton and a support vehicle also from Stockton.

Police also attended to carry out an investigation into how the collision happened.
