Campaign support is just the ticket

BUS drivers are streets ahead when it comes to road safety after giving their backing to lollipop crossing patrollers.

Bus operator Arriva is the latest transport provider to support the Mail's Stop for the Pops campaign, aimed at cracking down on menace drivers who ignore crossing patrollers near Hartlepool's schools.

Around nine services operate in and out of Hartlepool by Arriva during the course of the week.

Arriva's depot manager Geoff Morgan, who manages services in the Hartlepool area, said: "All of our bus drivers are 100 per cent behind the Mail's Stop for the Pop campaign.

"We spend the majority of our working day on the roads around Hartlepool, and know just how important it is to be extremely vigilant wherever we operate.

"We know these crossing patrollers do a fantastic job at keeping youngsters safe on their way to and from school, and we hope that this campaign will help more drivers become more aware of the need to be careful near crossings."

The Mail launched the campaign in February and since then, lollipop crossing patrollers have already noticed a difference.

Crossing patroller Kath Jones, 68, who works outside Hartlepool's Brougham Primary School, in Brougham Terrace, said drivers have been more sensible and have slowed down.

Many familiar faces have backed the campaign including Secretary of State for Transport, Geoff Hoon, Sky Sports' Hartlepool-born presenter Jeff Stelling, Sophie Wilson from X Factor finalists Bad Lashes and Hartlepool United Football Club.

The Mail has visited schools around the town to promote awareness, and also highlighted black spot areas where drive-throughs are most prevalent.

We have also dedicated a section of our website, www.hartlepool.mail.co.uk, to the campaign and people can find advice, the stories from lollipop patrollers, and can download our poster created in conjunction with town firm Atkinson Print.

We urge people to put up our posters in businesses, shops, homes and schools to help us show that rogue drivers will not be tolerated.
